Unexpected publicity.....

When Shanker called to ask is it ok to give my number to Ajith "THE HINDU" correspondent, I didn't thought that it will give me this much amount of publicity... But anyways... 40 -45 mins talk with him [ajith] proved useful to both of us, my misconceptions about "Opera" were changed. And I got a good amount of publicity in and out of the campus..( he..he even though its not for the first time).. my special thanx to dennis ( a.k.a THADIYAN) for generating interest in me to chrome.,to ashish for the night out download of chrome..and to shanker for introducing me to ajith...

Hey folks...

Its been a long time since I have updated my blog, now is the time of exams nd I don't feel like studying. So thought to write something about my always handy firefox addons...ya I am a great fan of firefox. the first thing that I will do when I got a net connected system will be installing latest version of firefox..
So let me introduce few of my favorite addons..

(1) Downthemall

A great download manager for firefox. Give you all the functionality of other download managers like pausing and resuming, speed acceleration etc.. It have some extra features like download all the links in page ( very handy if you want to download all the pdf files in page).
Its free of cost, available for both windows and linux. The speed acceleration is really good, really comparable to DAP and IDM...

(2) NoScript

One of the most popular add-ons of firefox. It will protect you from most of the malicious sites in the wild wild internet, by blocking sites from running scripts on the browser. Essential for you if you are keen about your privacy. You can allow which all sites are allowed to run scripts by clicking "options" tab that will popup whenever a site try to run a script.

(3) Adblock

The great ad blocker, blocks most of the flash adds. However I have found yet another use for this add-on, when you want to download a flash object or video that is embedded in a web page this add-on will come handy. After installation, adblock will display a "block" box on each of the blockable items be it flash, video etc... You can click on this box to get the URL of that object. use this URL in downthemall to download whatever you want.

Instant Gmail

hi folks
As you know gmail takes a loooong time to login. If you are using dial-up connection it will be a nigh mare for you to check the mail , daily as it will take 4 or 5 minutes to login to the account , some times to make things worse we may not be able to login at all from a slower connection!!.
Here is a little trick that will save you great a lot of time in logging into gmail..

Step 1:Get Firefox 2.x, and install it

Step 2:After installing go to tool=>options. Select the "Main" tab. Under
that you will see the "When Firefox Starts" option, change its value
to "Show Windows and tabs from last time"

Step 3:Now go to gmail.com and login. After you have finished login do not
logout just close the firefox it will ask for a confirmation if you keep
2 or more windows open
Step 4:Go to Start => Run and time "firefox -ProfileManager" and hit enter
a window will pop-up asking you to choose your profile, select the
default profile and rename it to "gmail" or something and then
choose to create a new profile for your normal usage offline or online
Also uncheck the "Don't ask at start up" option and close the box.

Voilla!!! next time you want to check your gmail open up firefox and a pop up window asking you to select the profile will pop up, Select the "gmail" profile and go to the gmail tab . It will automatically load your gmail inbox without logging in!!!

Note: This method is not secure since everyone who uses your computer wil have access to your gmail account.I am writing a plugin that will allows you to password protect your session
hope this will help you...see ya next time...

Recovering data from a formatted hard drive....

Hi folks.....
data loss is every computer user's nightmare.it may happen from virus attack, accidental format(in my friends case its what happened),or from physical damage...one i was enjoying a sunday one of my friend come to my room with a sad face saying that he accidently formatted his HD what he tried is to format a partition in which he installed linux but some how he lost all the partitions exept C He had a huge collection of technical stuff and dont want to loose it. i want to help him so did a bit of googling for harddisk recovery most of the results came up where sites of professional
companies who want thousands of $ for their software. skimming through the results i finally came across one interesting piece of software "test disk" its free hard disk recovery software. its really amazing its actually a command prompt program it dont have good GUI but it worked!!!!!

but working with it for the first time is really difficult it took me about 8 hours to get it working.... you can download the software from here

if have accidently formatted your hard disk make sure that you dont install
any new software or copy any new file to the hard drive this is because the computer actually dont deleate the file from the hard disk at the moment you delete it will delete only when you ask it to save some data and there are no free locations available, else computer will simply delete the file from the 'file allocation table' so that the OS cant see it and if possible do not try to run any recovery software from that hard disk connect it to any other computer and run the software on that( btw that is what i have done....)

i have attempted this on winXP their site says the have linux versions also but i have never tried it....
download the windows XP version of the test disk its a zip file unzip it. you will see a folder named " win" inside that there wll be tow executables namely "photorec_win" and "testdisk_win" the first one can be used to recover deleted files and the latter will allow you to recover the whole partition........
